Societal Issues

Public perceptions of O&G activities influence regulatory agencies and the accessibility to potential reserves. Understanding public perceptions and determining public acceptance of O&G operations is a key aspect of the EFD program.

This collaborative effort between Sam Houston State University and TAMU has two aspects:

Public Perception - Development activities raise concerns about noise, property damage, pollution and safety. Local residents within an active unconventional natural gas play will be surveyed with an instrument designed to measure individuals’ perception of the energy industry and their interest, knowledge, attitudes, experience, current behaviors, and behavioral intentions with regard to energy exploration and production issues. In addition, other “relevant” individual- and community-level variables (e.g., socio-demographic/ socioeconomic measures) will be included in the survey instrument. Based on the results of the survey, a plan will be develop to implement a multimedia effort to familiarize the public with drilling and production and to address concerns. Factsheets and other outreach educational materials pertaining to environmentally friendly energy exploration and production practices will be developed, printed and disseminated.

Social Impact - A review of potential social impacts will be documented. The document will include a discussion of potential intended and unintended social consequences, both positive and negative, that may be associated with community-level exploration and production activities.
