Types of Horizontal Wells

Short-Radius

Short radius wells have the smallest curvature radius typically 20-45 feet.  These wells tend to be drilled from an existing vertical well and are used to increase the oil and gas recovery from previously developed wells.

Medium-Radius

Medium-radius wells usually have a curvature radius that ranges from 300-700 feet.  A medium-radius well is more precise than long-radius wells at shallower depths and can access formations at distances where long-radius wells aren't needed or are impractical.

Long-Radius

Long-radius wells tend to have the largest curvature radius of about 1,000-4000 feet and can reach great lengths.  These wells are ideal for accessing off-shore deposits and reaching locations where vertical drilling is prohibited.
