Desalinated Produced Water Uses
Desalinated produced water has many uses including the following: Potable water, augment stream flow, and agriculture use.
Potable water, also known as drinking water is one of the uses of produced water. The produced water must meet certain EPA drinking water standards before use. If the total dissolved solids (TDS) exceeds the standards of drinking water, it's possible to blend it with another clean water source to dilute it.
In some regions fresh water is in short supply. Local users tend to exert these resources especially in barren areas. Stream augmentation can be used to help replenish these reservoirs as long as they meet surface water quality standards. Can also be used to monitor streams pH levels, temperature, and dissolved oxygen (DO).
Desalinated brine can also be used as a water source for livestock and in crop irrigation.  High levels of alkali and toxic chemicals can be hazardous to animals and should be monitored. If used for irrigation you have to take into consideration the salt tolerance of certain crops and the terrain.Â
